Outlook on a New Economy
If you’re like me, the news of bailout bonuses for the same scum that brought our economy to its knees comes in a blur. Perhaps it’s rage, perhaps it’s the overwhelming feeling one might get if they really think hard about it. To me, it’s incomprehensible; I have enough on my mind, so I don’t think upon this historical current event as much as I maybe should. I just become more convinced that this unsustainable system can’t survive, and won’t survive in my reality.
These unexplainable symptoms are part of the dying process. Our old economy dies and with that once mighty powerhouse seeing its last days, confusion happens. The old method of rewarding failure with millions, the empty, financial geekspeak, the sham of it all, is on display for every person to see. Feel it. Embrace it. Hate it.
I believe that within a few years, maybe sooner, it will all be over. We will see a shift like nothing we ever anticipated where monetary affluence is nothing and one’s skills, community ties and relationship to local food will be what counts. This empire we know will be nothing more than a story for the grandkids. The idea of going to work will not default to working for a company or multinational corporation, but for oneself. Survival will be the new “Joneses” to keep up with.
We’ve let it get this bad, now we must embrace the consequences or jump ship. Many of us have been raised to be strictly consumers, not producers – those of us will die unless we get really creative fast. Or lucky somehow. The idea of investing in stocks (if not already) will be antiquated. No longer will the size of someone’s pickup truck, SUV hydraulics or car stereo system impress people, but the size of their garden or solar panel and rain catchment setup. Consultant-speak, powerpoint presentations, bad company exercises created by C-minus Communications majors, the rewarding of tanking the company in the form of financial bonus packages… all a thing of the past, perhaps the cause of more than one grave pissed on.
Terms like “green” and “community” will not have room to be novelty or catch phrases as they are today – it will be green or die! The status quo will erode. There will be no allowance for meaningless seminars or PR-firm letters to save some incompetent rich guy’s hiney. Reality, a new beginning.
